The Little Green Car

Mr Bevan owned a sweet shop at the end of our road and he sold all sorts of goodies that we used to by on our way to school, not that we were allowed to eat them in our lessons though because Mrs Briars was a bit of a dragon and would have told us off most severely.

One day we noticed a new car parked across the road from the shop and it had Mr Bevan’s name on it, crikey we thought that’s a bit flash, what a show off. But we knew he was a lovely man who always had a smile for us when we went into his shop to buy sweets and Mrs Bevan was a lovely lady too, always joking with him especially about his bald head which she complained always shone into her eyes when the sun was out. That did make us laugh when she said it and he always came with some funny remarks about her hair or the dress she was wearing but neither of them used to get upset with the other they always laughed a lot. That’s what my mum said made theirs a happy marriage and that I should always remember that later in life.

One morning in early June then sun was shining brightly when I was on my way to school and I called into the sweetshop to get some humbugs to last me through the day when some bigger boys came into the shop and starting to push and shove one another and generally be a nuisance all round and during one of their skirmishes they knocked over little Jimmy Smith who was also in the shop.

He hit his head on the edge of the counter and cut his head open and started to scream, Mrs Bevan came running down from their flat upstairs where she and Mr Bevan lived and went to Jimmy’s aid.

Blood was pouring from the cut on his head and Mrs Bevan wrapped a towel around the wound and told Mr Bevan to take Jimmy to the hospital which was a short drive away and Jimmy, who was now crying, asked me to go with him so I followed them out to Mr Bevan’s little car which was parked around the corner. I was worried sick about Jimmy and thought my mum would be upset if I was late for school but I was sure she would understand and I got into the back set with Jimmy and tried to keep him calm as Mr Bevan sped away off to the Hospital. We arrived at the front door at a screech and two nurses with a wheelchair said everything will be ok Jimmy we will soon have you right and back to normal as Mr Bevan was explaining what had happened in his shop to cause the situation they took Jimmy off inside to tend his wound. Just then Jimmy’s parents arrived as Mrs Bevan had rung them to tell them what had happened and they rushed to the hospital to see how their son was. The doctor looked at the wound and said it’s not too serious but it needs six stitches to close the wound so Jimmy he said you will have to be a brave little soldier as it’s going to sting a bit. Soon all was well and Jimmy went home with his parents and Mr Bevan took me back to the shop in his little car which was green and has his name on the bottom for good luck and it sure was that morning, being on hand to take Jimmy to the hospital. When I eventually got to school Mrs Briars did not look to pleased that I was late arriving but Mr Bevan came with me to explain what had happened and she was ok after that. The other pupils in the class wanted to know all the gory details, how much blood was there, did Jimmy scream loud, did he faint, is he ok. Yes I replied to all three just to make it sound more dramatic but it was all a bit of a fib as Jimmy was too shocked to do much and was in fact very brave about it all and after that we became very close friends and still are today which just goes to show how strange life can be and I have always remembered Mr Bevan and his little green car and how nice he and his wife were to Jimmy.

Our Poetry is more like short stories in verse which is based on what we see and hear and from our complete imagination.
